Entropy

Entropy

The best synonym for “Entropy” is probably disorder. Think also “chaos”.  In other words, any “system” in the universe, when left alone, naturally tends toward disorder. This is a law of physics as well as of life itself. By a “closed system” we mean a body, organization, or natural system or group. In the absence of external pressures, things tend toward more entropy, or disorder. Think of your car, your home, or even your body. Without maintenance, without some external activity to maintain or repair, all will tend toward a state of disrepair, disorder, or even complete chaos or destruction.

As I implied in last week’s column, it is human nature to try to affect closed systems (like our own bodies) by imposing order on a system which naturally tends toward disorder. So, we attempt to maintain our living spaces, our vehicles and our bodies so they may serve us. We strive to achieve control over disorder. This is the human condition and a lifelong struggle for many of us. The serenity prayer, recited at all AA and NA meetings can be particularly helpful as we are continually stressed by our attempts to claim control over chaos. I will paraphrase as follows:

Please grant me the serenity to accept that which I cannot control,

The strength to change that which I can.

And the wisdom to know the difference.

This helps us to prioritize our lives. We naturally want to control that which appears out of control to us. But if we can utilize the principles of the serenity prayer, it can be much less stressful to us. Why not minimize the stress and anxiety of an already stressful, disordered world!?! Remember, when left alone, things naturally tend toward disorder, and it is the crux of the human condition to try to impose order on a naturally disordered universe. I wish you health and good fortune!
